Jack Green. Víctor Manuel Núñez García is the author of many important works having won a prize for ‘The Start of the Liberal Regime in Huelva (1834-1868)’ – (Los inicios del régimen liberal en Huelva). This is the piece that he is most well known for about the first politicians to represent Huelva.
He told us about one of his books ‘Huelva in Las Cortes’ where a group was formed in the capital and whose contribution helped create a major link with Madrid. He also spoke about the development of the port with the mining companies and how the same men built the road from Huelva to Badajoz.
Núñez also speaks about 52 people who represented Huelva in the 19th Century. He analysed the characteristics of the group taking data and examining the risk of their heritage, what they studied at university and the contribution they gave in the Chamber of Madrid.
Talking more generally Núñez said that: “The opinion of general society is that people are not going to be employed working with history. However, there is more and more demand for products of history like television series, which are appearing more frequently in people’s homes”.
He said that history serves as an umbrella to the current political questions of today. Each time politician’s debate you can always relate it back to history. The problem is that lots of people don’t want to remember the important truth.
Núñez is trying to combat the loss of value in history and raise the profile of the past within Huelva through cultural activities like the Film and History course and a course for Young Historians, this is in conjunction with Huelva’s Town Council (Ayuntamiento de Huelva).
