Jack Green. Two local policemen from Huelva have completed the Santiago Way by bike, covering more than 600 kilometres in just four days.
Juan Rafael Preito and Juan Jose Trabazo are work colleagues in the Local Police in Huelva and cycling enthusiasts. This year they both wanted to accomplish the route in Compostela by bike as a different experience.
The trip started on 28th June, when they left Huelva for Plasencia (Badajoz), a section that they didn’t do by bike but used the Huelva – Zafra train. For family reasons both of the cyclists couldn’t spend too many days away from their houses, so they decided to use the railway that connects Huelva and Extremadura.
After spending the night in Plasencia, they left in the morning of 29th June and it took them just 3 days to arrive at their destination, Santiago de Compostela on 2nd July.
Their first day, they covered 170km; 160km in their second day; 170km again in the third day and 110km in the fourth and final day.
Rafael Prieto said that it was a very good experience, only a few mechanical problems along the route stopped the pair but nothing happened that they couldn’t solve.
The cyclists chose a combination of a route between the Santiago Way, The Silver Route (La Ruta de la Plata) and The Sanabres route (La Ruta de Sanabres).
They said that the hardest part of the ride was the climb up to Zamora, it was quite an arid environment. One of the most intriguing places that the pair passed on the route, without doubt was the village The Earth Cube of Wine (El Cubo de la Tierra de Vinos), en Zamora.
At the end of it all the both men want to go back and do this unique experience again.
