Jack Green. This weekend sees Cortegana return to being a Medieval town for another year. An international festival headlined by Celtica Pipes Rock, the most important Celtic music group in America.
It will be one of many attractions of the Cortegana Medieval Days. The festival is spread out over four days transforming the small town of 5,000 people into a medieval metropolis where more than 60,000 visitors will descend on the mountainous community.
A strong security presence (Plan Juglar) will be in place to look after the residents and visitors, this being the second most important in the region, after the Pilgramage of Rocio (la Romeria del Rocio), given the amount of people that attend the event.
The festival is one of the oldest in Andalucia and has one of the largest programmes, with over 100 activities being run for people of all ages. There is also a market with 200 craft stalls from all over Spain.
The mayor of Cortegana Jose Enrique Borrallo wants to invite all of the province so that they can experience the Medieval Days. Not surprisingly, the mayor also wanted to highlight that it is an event that always brings tourists to the area.
Other points of interest around Cortegana are the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche, without forgetting La Parroquia del Divino Salvador and el Castillo de Sancho IV. Buildings that are a part of Bien de Interes Cultural (BIC).
The opening of the Medieval Days festival takes place this Thursday 8th August at 8.00pm in La Plaza de la Constitucion. There will be a fully packed programme that will run until 11.00pm on Sunday 11th August, where the finale will be in the castle’s enclosure with an animated show called ‘The Maiden and the Snake’. However the highlight of the weekend will be when Celtica Pipes Rock take to the stage on Saturday at 12 ‘o’ clock midnight.
